Why do I offer videography?
I have been enjoying couples’ trust as their wedding photographer in Oaxaca since 2008.
How did I end up offering videography as well?
Below you will find answers to this and other questions you may want to ask the videographer you are interested in for your wedding, as well as plenty of examples of the videos I have provided my couples of their Oaxaca destination weddings. Let’s go!
Why videography, Reason One.
I love movies and always have. Some of my earliest memories are in the movie theatre. (My first movie in a theatre was E.T. and I thought the little guy was going to come out on stage after it was over. I thought I’d just watched a play. I kept looking back at the screen as everyone shuffled back out to daylight.)
In 2014, I got an expensive new camera and it had video capabilities. Then I was hired to take photos for the Oaxaca Film Fest, and one of the organizers asked me if I never had the desire to make movies. I demurred–it seemed so out of reach! But his question suddenly made it seem not only possible, but like something I should be doing. I made my first short film the next year, and my second short film was actually selected to be in the Oaxaca Film Fest a couple years later.
I still didn’t offer videography to my wedding couples, but it was becoming harder to resist. Finally, right before the pandemic, I did offer videography and booked my first wedding! … which was then postponed due to the pandemic. So my first wedding offering videography came post-pandemic–2021. Because most couples preferred booking both photo & video with me, I continued to focus on photography while becoming the director on the videography side. (Although, if you’re having an elopement or intimate wedding, what’s worked very well is for me to do both photo and video as a solo artist.)
For this intimate engagement session somewhere off the beaten path in Oaxaca, N&B, not wanting a crowd for their private moment, entrusted me with photography, videography, and drone. Far from being overwhelmed by the task, I thrived on having complete control over the look & feel, the timing, the angles. No waiting around, no competing for “vision,” time, space, or angles, I was able to work efficiently on one singular vision throughout the session, and we all loved the results.
Here is some of their feedback:

“10/10 would absolutely recommend Doug for photography and videography! He is a pleasure to work with — super communicative, speedy turn around times (including a sneak peak soon after our shoot), and gave great direction through the session. He has creative ideas for capturing angles and landscapes and went the extra mile to film footage of the scenery in between shots. Both the photos and the videos turned out even better than we could have imagined!”
Reason One, continued.
For bigger weddings, my experienced and talented videographers readily capture the look & feel that I’m going for, and then I give detailed instructions to my editor to shape it until it’s ready for me to take over to get the pacing just right, both with the emotions being expressed on the screen, and with how they match the soundtrack. My objective is to create a seamless experience, a ride on a flowing ribbon, with no room for boredom, aimlessness, or cheesiness.
Why videography, Reason Two.
Aside for my love of making movies and wanting to get them right, the other reason I began offering videography to my wedding couples was I saw a need for it on the wedding day.
I mean this in two senses.
The first sense is that the photo & video process during the wedding day can be so much more seamless when we are all working together towards the same goal–the best possible photography AND videography outcome for the bride and groom.
When two different teams show up, each has only the one goal (the best photography for this team, and the best videography for that team), which means–sometimes, when push comes to shove–they accept sacrificing the other team’s goal to achieve their own.
Just speaking from my personal experience, in worst-case scenarios, video-only teams, unconcerned about the photographer, sometimes take the easy way out too often, which is to use a wide-angle lens in the bride’s face for hours on end, eliminating the best angles the photographer is working to shoot from, and ultimately making countless photographs impossible to get throughout the day. When photo and video is working together on the same team, this doesn’t happen and they are both able to maximize their coverage for the couple.
The other sense of the need for one team for both photo & video is found in post-production. The deliverables across both media are much more consistent in look, feel, and quality, when one director (myself in this case) can oversee it all.
There you have it–the essentials on why I have begun offering photography and videography to my discerning couples.
From these you can pull out some of the key questions to ask videographers, such as:
Why do you offer this service? What motivates you to put in the effort, and what problems are you trying to solve for the couple?
How do you work with the photographer? Do you use a wide-angle close up to the bride all day? (Yes, I’m being a bit snarky, but this is a huge question from the photographer’s point of view!)
Do you choose the songs or does the couple? Do you allow revisions if they see a shot they don’t like, or want a different font on the title, or want more footage of their friends dancing? Where do you fall on the spectrum between commercial and artistic? (This will be evident from the videos themselves.) Do you pose your couples? Do you ask them to kiss for the camera? (Note: I do not. I’m looking for a minimum of cheesy fake typical wedding moments, and a maximum of you two being yourselves. Of course, if you feel moved to kiss, go for it, but it won’t be because I told you to.)
Video Lengths – How to Choose
Now that we have the fundamental questions answered, let’s go to the basics of the package choices: Video duration.
There are three main lengths:
45 minutes, approx. 5 to 8 minutes, and 1 minute.
Let’s look at each one by one.
45 minutes. Include this one if:
Note: The long one can go longer than 45 minutes if needed (i.e. long vows, speeches, etc.)
5 to 8 minutes. Include this one if:
One minute. Include this one if:
And that’s it! All you need to know to get started making your videography decision for the big day! Want help figuring out which video package is right for you? Drop me a line, I’m happy to help.
Now let’s take a look at those examples I promised.
It was just me doing photo, video, and drone for Sarah and Ismael.
It was just me doing photo, video, and drone for Felicia and George.
It was just me doing photo and video for Fer and Pepe.
Add a time-lapse video to your wedding package for a fun, mesmerizing perspective on your ceremony or dance floor. This add-on captures the essence of these moments in a concise, cinematic format, perfect for sharing the energy of your day at a glimpse. It’s a creative way to represent the flow and atmosphere of your celebration, offering a polished, dynamic keepsake you’ll value for years to come.
This timelapse I created solo with two action cameras and drone, while I took photos and my videographer took video.

We are so lucky to have had Douglas introduced to us to be our wedding photographer. My husband and I are not big on photo shoots, but Douglas made them fun, relaxed, and let us be ourselves the entire time. He was very patient throughout the shoots and had great ideas/suggestions. As far as turnaround time, obviously wedding pictures take quite a bit of time, but he sent us a great selection of pictures just a couple of days after the wedding so that we could start looking at them. After he edited the photos, I had some preference on the effects of some, and he was very receptive to my preference and quickly made the edits I had requested. Lastly, although we were born in Mexico, we live in the US. Douglass had the best of both worlds. He is fluent in both english and spanish, which allowed us to express as was natural to us, plus it made the communication a lot easier! 10/10!

Planning a wedding in Oaxaca from Boston coming out of the pandemic was challenging, and we felt like we were “flying blind” a little bit selecting vendors. Right away, Doug was responsive and we were impressed by his photography style and gallery of past photos. Working with him over the next year and, of course on the day-of, proved to be a great choice. Our wedding was small and laid back, and while we wanted photos to remember the day, we didn’t want it to distract us from enjoying the moment. Doug seamlessly accomplished just that. We initially didn’t want a videographer, but decided at the last minute we wanted some video footage of the event. Doug and his videography team came through for us at the last minute–and at a very reasonable rate for booking both photo and video. We LOVE looking back on our photos and wedding videos and it brings us right back to that special day. We could not recommend Doug more!!

Galleries typically include 100 images per hour. The exact amount varies from wedding to wedding. Your online gallery will come loaded with edited, high-resolution images you can print and share.
We typically add travel fees on to any wedding outside of a 60-mile radius from the city of Oaxaca. Fees vary depending on location, so just ask for more details. (At the moment, there are no travel fees for many locations because I am building my portfolio of destination weddings outside Oaxaca.)
Do you work alone or with a team?
The typical photo-and-video package includes myself and one other photographer, and two videographers, for a total of four of us.
However, packages can be customized to suit your needs. For example, I have been the sole photographer for many weddings, especially for smaller weddings and elopements.
Enjoy a Save-the-Date session at no extra charge, valid the moment you reserve your wedding package. Your session can take place any available weekday or Sunday in Oaxaca city, or in a natural setting nearby, typically several months before your wedding, during a visit to Oaxaca while preparing for your wedding. If a Save-the-Date session turns out to be impossible, this offer can also be used for a casual session a few days before the wedding day.
Wedding packages can cover photography, videography, or both, from 8 hours and up, and the average couple chooses both photography and videography with 12 hours of coverage.
Your custom package can also include time-lapse, drone, and photo books or albums.
