If you are looking for the top 10 NEXT-LEVEL wedding venues for Oaxaca, Mexico, to celebrate your incredible day, you are in the right place! Stay tuned to the end to find out which Oaxaca wedding venues DIDN’T make the list!
As a destination wedding photographer based in Oaxaca since 2008, with over 16 years of experience shooting more than 200 weddings for adventurous couples looking for a one-of-a-kind experience, I know these places personally. I’ve captured everything from intimate outdoor ceremonies to grand multi-day celebrations, and these venues stand out for enhancing the experience for you and your guests with their unique look and feel and attention to detail.
(A note about this list: I speak from personal experience, having photographed weddings in Oaxaca, where I have lived since 2007. And I do not get any kick-backs from any of the venues.)
Without further ado, here are my top 10 recommendations for next-level wedding venues for your ceremony and/or reception in Oaxaca.
Casa Dos Lagos emerged as a favorite since its arrival on the scene in the early 2010s, offering a serene, reclusive wooded escape just outside Oaxaca City.
This versatile venue features three distinct areas: a beautiful reclusive wooded area for intimate natural ceremonies with sunlight filtering through the canopy (see picture), as well as a wide-open space for large open-air ceremonies or parties, and a third ample space for medium-sized guest lists. This third one has a tall rock wall to one side and one of the two reflective ponds on the other, making it a favorite reception spot for its romantic, mirrored water effect.
Budget extra for transportation as it’s a 20-30 minute drive from the city center.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Multiple customizable spaces | Remote location requires shuttles |
| Stunning natural backdrops for photos | Weather-dependent (rainy season Jul-Oct) |
| Ample parking and on-site accommodations | Higher costs for larger setups |
La Fábrica is a hidden gem in Oaxaca’s Centro Histórico, transforming an old factory into an urban oasis for small to medium-sized weddings.
It has two spaces for the ceremony–the main space at street level and a smaller, more intimate space below. The main space features a red-clay wall that is a work of art unto itself on one side, and another textured wall at the back, and plenty of plants between, including full-grown trees, making for a relaxed nature-vibe right in the heart of the Centro Histórico.
At a recent wedding I photographed here, the lower space’s intimacy made the personal messages from the bride and groom and their pastor more meaningful, and the upper patio’s vibrancy kept the dance floor going strong hours into the night.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Short walk from Santo Domingo | Limited capacity for big weddings |
| Artistic, photogenic elements | Weather-dependent, open-air main level |
| Flexible indoor-outdoor flow | Low ceiling in lower-level space |
El Cardenal is one of the most conveniently located destination wedding venues in Oaxaca, just north of Santo Domingo church on the tourist promenade, Calle Alcalá. It is full of unique design choices and features special, smaller spaces, each with its own feel, around the main wide-open space. For example, just look at this bar! This became the scene for a mezcal mixology station that the guests loved.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Prime location | No parking |
| Diverse photo opportunities | Less secluded than out of town spots |
| Modern-rustic aesthetic | In rainy season, tent-cover needed over wide open space. |
El Jardín Don Luis is a spacious and luscious garden about a half-hour south of the city on the way to the airport. With a gently rolling hill leading to the ample reception site, this space with its super tall palm trees, impeccably curated landscaping featuring stunning plants, is absolutely a next-level wedding venue in Oaxaca if you want your guests to feel the grandness of a large, open-air, natural setting.
El Hotel Quinta Real is the classic destination wedding venue in Oaxaca for an intimate to medium-sized wedding. Originally a religious complex, with cantera stone walls, archways, patios and courtyards, terrace and pool, a chapel, and the famous “lavaderos,” or wash basin where nuns would hand-wash their clothes and linen, Hotel Quinta Real is a perennial favorite. Some couples have their entire wedding here, using the lavaderos for their ceremony, the pool for their cocktail hour, and the chapel for their reception.
La Hacienda Piedra Azul, about a half-hour outside of Oaxaca, welcomes guests with an expansive lawn with a walkway leading to the homestead’s large arched doorway and classic colonial courtyard, perfect for medium to large weddings. From my first time covering a wedding here, I knew it had earned a spot on my top 10 next-level wedding venues for Oaxaca.
Hotel Azul combines clean-lined minimalism with baby-blue boutique walls, heavy colonial wood doors, and a masterful sculpture and greco-style stone fountain wall studded with bright green ferns at the far end, which serves as an arresting backdrop for intimate ceremonies and dynamic dance-floors alike.
Proyecto Murguía is as centrally located as it gets, just off Alcalá, a couple blocks south of Santo Domingo. And no venue has more beautifully textured surfaces. Aging and decay have never looked more vital than in these multiple-layered walls and exposed beams, each with rich gradations of color.
Loma Noble is one of the newest venues on the Oaxaca destination wedding scene. Located only about a half hour from the Centro Histórico of Oaxaca City, it features epic hilltop venues of the maguey fields all around its property.
This hilltop makes for the perfect ceremony site for elopements and small weddings. It also has a small reservoir with a treetop-canopied hall and larger area for more elaborate manmade coverings from the elements, and an impressive new bathroom facility.
Before it went public, I was honored to be chosen by Loma Noble to showcase its natural beauty and vast views for those looking for something completely different for their elopement, casual session, intimate wedding, or large wedding, and saw even then its amazing potential to be high on any list of the top 10 next-level wedding venues for Oaxaca, Mexico.
El Jardín Etnobotánico has been for many years the quintessential Oaxaca wedding venue. The sense of grand magnificence derives from its immense scale and classic architecture made entirely of cantera stone. Its expansive patio easily receives several hundred guests, and never feels too closed-in, because from the patio extends the garden. Just off the patio is the most iconic view–the cactus wall standing proudly before the reflection pool. Plants of unexpected shapes and textures, in landscapes designed by Oaxacan artists, further intensify the feelings of vitality, creativity, and beauty inspired by the afore-mentioned architecture.
There you have it: the top 10 next-level weddding venues for Oaxaca, Mexico, according to one who has witnessed what it’s like to experience, and capture, weddings at each place.
Of course I have more faves, like Casa Quiote, Restaurante Criollo, Hotel Sin Nombre, Hotel Nana Vida, and Casa Oaxaca Hotel in the Centro, and a handful of lesser-known, boutique, and rustic venues for intimate and off-the-beaten path ceremonies. And let’s not forget the incredible Oaxacan coast! I’d be happy to go into more detail with you about these places and more. Just reach out.
