Jardín Etnobotánico Wedding Venue, Oaxaca

For years the Jardín Etnobotánico has been the quintessential Oaxaca wedding venue. It sits behind Santo Domingo in the Centro Histórico, it’s huge, and it’s built of cantera stone. Its patio holds several hundred guests without feeling closed in, because the garden opens right off it.

Next to the patio is the most famous view in Oaxaca weddings: the cactus wall in front of the reflection pool. The rest of the garden is full of plants in unexpected shapes and textures, in landscapes designed by Oaxacan artists.

Some couples have their reception here. Many more come for portraits between a ceremony at Santo Domingo or a hotel nearby and a reception somewhere else in the Centro. These are the weddings I’ve photographed here.

Xime + Luis

Xime and Luis saw each other for the first time in the garden, among the agaves and the tall cactus, and their bridesmaids and groomsmen joined them at the reflection pool. Their ceremony was at Santo Domingo, and the reception at La Fábrica Patio.

Margoth + Isaac

Margoth and Isaac came from the Hotel Quinta Real for portraits in the garden, along the reflection pools and in front of the cactus wall.

Sylvana + Felipe

Sylvana and Felipe got ready and were married at the Hotel Quinta Real, then had their formals and reception at the Jardín Etnobotánico.

Paula + Toto

Paula and Toto had a formals session with just the two of them in the garden before their ceremony at La Fábrica Patio. We stayed mostly in the shade, so they stayed fresh, and used the stone walls and the lines of the plants.

Nicole + Robert

Nicole and Robert had their ceremony and reception at Casa Quiote and came up to the Jardín Etnobotánico for their formals, with the whole wedding party at the reflection pool.

I also photographed Meredith and Jaime here, with no posed formals at all, just the day as it happened.
